Abstract

The recent availability of large datasets of people whereabouts provides an unprecedented opportunity to study the pulse of the city. We developed tools to apply Kernel Density Estimation to whereabouts data collected through GPS-logging applications. We evaluated such mechanisms using approximately 790,000 GPS traces extracted from Nokia Sports Tracker. We rst show that our approach can be applied to identify popular areas of the city. Then, we present some novel applications of the above technique. This kind of analysis allows to highlight human-centered geographies that can support city planning and context-aware pervasive services for urban spaces.
